A British Intelligence Report Correcting the Alawadi Family Name (Awadhi Instead of Awazi)

A British intelligence report that corrects the spelling of the family name to “Al-Awadi” instead of “Awazi,” as it was written by many British and others in the last century. One of the British intelligence reports concerns the smuggling of Indian tea in Kuwait; Muhammad Al-Awadi is mentioned in the report. The author of the report corrected the spelling of the family name from “Awazi” to “Awadhi.” The reason for the “Awazi” pronunciation was the British reliance on the Persians in their identification of the various social classes, sects, and tribes in southern Fars Province; it is well known that Persians are unable to pronounce the letter “dhad,” so they resorted to calling the Awadhi people “Awazi.” The author of the report explained this and clarified that this pronunciation is incorrect and must be corrected by stating “Awadhi it should be” after mentioning the name Muhammad al-Awadhi. The report also notes that the aforementioned Muhammad al-Awadhi smuggles tea from Kuwait to Iran only, and not to India.

تقرير استخباري بريطاني فيه تصحيح للفظ الاسم العائلي وهو: "عوضي" بدلاً من "أوزي" كما كتبه العديد من البريطانيين وغيرهم في القرن الماضي. أحد التقارير الاستخبارية البريطانية حول تهريب الشاي الهندي في الكويت، أحد المذكورين في التقرير هو محمد العوضي. قام كاتب التقرير بتصحيح كتابة الاسم العائلي من أوزي إلى عوضي. السبب في لفظهم أوزي هو اعتماد البريطانيين على الفرس في تعرفتهم على الشرائح والطوائف والقبائل المختلفة في جنوب بر فارس، ومن المعلوم عدم قدرة الفرس على نطق حرف "الضاد،" فلجأووا إلى تسمية العوضيين بالأوزيين، وهذا ما بينه الكاتب في التقرير وأوضح بأن اللفظ هذا خطأ ويجب تصحيحه بقوله (Awadhi it should be) بعد ذكر اسمه محمد العوضي. كما يذكر التقرير أن محمد العوضي المذكور اسمه يقوم بتهريب الشاي من الكويت إلى إيران فقط وليس إلى الهند.
