A rare historical document dating back to 1353 AH, corresponding to 1934 AD, from the ledger of merchant Muhammad Abdulrahman Abdullah Al-Zarouni —one of the leading financiers of diving and travel expeditions in the 1930s in Umm Al Quwain. The document details Al-Zarouni’s financing of all expenses for a diving expedition in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, including those of the sailors and divers. The person who borrowed the amount was Isa bin Ahmad Al-Zaabi, and the following individuals witnessed the transaction: • Abdullah bin Fares • Sultan bin Ibrahim Al-Qatami • Yusuf Abdullah Mulla Ali Al-Awadhi This document reflects an important era in the history of diving and maritime finance in the Gulf, and their role in supporting the maritime economy before the discovery of oil in Umm Al Quwain.
